Playing Cards: Pandemic Games to Brighten Your Day

You remember playing cards… those different kingdoms battling it out with strategy and cunning maneuvers to reign supreme. No, not Game of Thrones. Playing Cards. We touch real objects in front of us, look at them and make choices that are fun and exciting.

Playing Cards are as old as – let’s call it forever. And Europe got on the wooden wagon in the fourteenth century. The first American colonists boated their way over with playing cards in tow, a prized possession that made the arduous days more livable with laughter and comradery.

At least some people you know, your grandpa or your mom or your favorite professor over fifty, are participating in playing card games regularly. But so do a lot of young and middle-aged folks. It’s an American past time still alive and well today, as it should be. Heck you don’t even need electricity!

Playing Cards Come Cheap or Customized

You may even have a deck or five strewn about your place somewhere. Treasure hunt or pick some up for a couple bucks. They’re an amusing diversion and don’t take up space (sorry massive boardgames).

Cool playing card designs and custom decks exist too, so you can get personalized decks based on your pet, sports team, hobbies, whatever makes you happy.

Bored, shut in your house or apartment? Play Cards.

With playing cards, you can enjoy hours of free entertainment and take a break from technology. Keep your mind engaged in a relaxing way, without eye strain!

The habit of staring at our screens all day is draining (to our hearts, minds and souls – among other things). We can easily forget how awesome some simple hands-on games and activities can be.

Playing Cards Improve Your Mood and Memory

Engaging more of our senses in a joyful, hands-on leisure activity gives us an endorphin release. Umm, yes please. Let’s face it, I don’t jog as much as I need to. Concentrating on a humorous game gives us relief from worrying about everything else and keeps our memories sharp. It’s nice to focus on something fun for a change.

Scrolling through a Facebook feed is not as engaging or positive as playing a card game. You can escape the news and the drama for a while. Shuffle, smile, repeat.

Games for One Person, 2 Player or Small Groups

If it’s just you or a small group, playing cards give you something interesting to do. You can go solo with Solitaire or countless other one person playing cards games.

You can play in a pair with your bestie, partner or favorite card shark relative. Or, you can enjoy a few rounds in the small group you’re fortunate enough to be confined with. Poker, Rummy, Euchre – it’s up to you.

Playing Cards Is an All Ages Activity

A good time for all ages. Young, old, you name it – everyone enjoys playing card games. While Bridge lovers may skew older, and Go Fish fans skew on the younger side – playing cards allow you to have endless options and choose a game everyone wants to participate in.

They are the most versatile game style I’ve found. Even grumpy kids or grandpas can be convinced to play a card game. You might even get them to perk up and chuckle a bit while they try to hide it.
